New year, same me!
Happy New Year all,
Since we’re now four days into 2018 and I’m back and settled in Abu Dhabi after the Christmas and New Year festivities, I’ve been thinking about what my resolutions for 2018 will be. I spent this morning looking through my Facebook profile and, scrolling back through the months, I realised that 2017 was a pretty amazing year! I’m really proud of everything that I’ve done this year, one of the highlights being all the travelling we did.
In 2017 alone I got to visit Czech Republic, Thailand, Ireland, Croatia, Portugal and France, not to mention a few staycations in Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah and Zaya Nurai Island.
We also did a lot of work on our house at home and managed to squeeze in as much wedding planning as possible. After a three year course, I finally finished my Masters in Educational Leadership. I got up the courage to start my little blog, which I didn’t think anyone would ever read and was all the more surprised to learn that some people actually do! After much searching, I found my perfect wedding dress and also watched one of my best friends get married! I got to spend Christmas with my family and friends and rang in the new year under the sparkling lights of the Eiffel Tower. So yeah, 2017 has been one hell of a year and I have big hopes for 2018 as well.
I have decided, though, not to make any outright resolutions. Those I made last year didn’t all follow through; I still haven’t learned to make gluten free bread from scratch, I still don’t speak any Italian and I’ve yet to start watching Game of Thrones. But instead of focusing on what I didn’t achieve, I’ve decided to keep working on what I did right last year. I want to do a lot more blogging this year since it’s something that I really enjoy and I plan on focusing more on what I’m interested in the most; travel and fashion. I’m also going to be going full on wedding planning mode so keep an eye out for more wedding themed blog posts and snap stories.
I picked up a tip last year for better managing my days and I’ll definitely be carrying it through to 2018. The idea was to write down the three main things you want to achieve each day. There’s no point in making a to do list of 20+ tasks because, chances are, you’ll never get them all done. So I started noting each morning, the ‘big 3’ that I needed to do each day, whether it be getting to the gym, doing the grocery shopping or catching up on emails, I made sure to just pick the three most important each day and tried to get them done. At the end of the day, you definitely feel a sense of accomplishment when you can tick off the ‘big 3’ and this motivates you to continue the following day. After a while, this became second nature and I found myself more organised and having more time for things I enjoyed. I’d recommend giving it a go if you find yourself struggling to get 101 things done each day.
Also this year, I plan to spend more time enjoying simple pleasures, like a sleep in, or enjoying a tv series, or reading good books. Much of my reading last year was focused on academic articles but now I’m free to read whatever I want!
Finally, I’ve decided that I want to remind myself each day to be grateful for my health and happiness. 2017 went by so quickly and 2018 probably will too, so when life and work can seem overwhelming I plan on taking a step back, going for a manicure and having some ‘me’ time (okay, so that is one of my mini resolutions…to take better care of my nails!).
Here’s to a year filled with positivity and growth…and a wedding! EEEEK!
